- Abstract (DE)
- In exploring warehouse logistics, simulation provides an appropriate method of controlled experimentation unrestrained by real-world constraints. Mainly, discrete event-based or agent-based simulations are used here. However, many studies suffer from unclear assumptions, inconsistent modeling techniques, and dependence on commercial software solutions, which hinders reproducibility, comparability, and knowledge transfer. To overcome these limitations, we introduce an open-source simulation framework for standardized benchmarking within warehouse environments. This framework combines a web-based layout editor, a Python simulation engine, and an interactive visualization tool. It supports a variety of methods, such as (meta-)heuristics and (multi-agent) reinforcement learning, under consistent experimental conditions. In addition, the framework facilitates the development, documentation, and reuse of standardized test cases, enabling method comparison. The initial results indicate an increase in transparency, improved comparability of methods, and a greater degree of reproducibility. Through the framework, research progress in warehouse optimization will be accelerated and community-driven innovations will be fostered.
