- Following up on the emerging field of transition design, this article proposes to investigate what design interventions can promote the transition of socio-technical systems towards more sustainable configurations. To do this, the proposal draws from participatory design and aims to develop a prototyping infrastructure as a design intervention that deliberately promotes the emergence of boundary objects in transdisciplinary research on sustainability transitions. Boundary objects, due to their interpretive flexibility enable communication across different social worlds and allow collaboration without consensus. To integrate the boundary object concept into design research and investigate what design characteristics or boundary-spanning mechanisms contribute to the functioning of visual representations as effective boundary objects, an integrative literature review and an exploratory study are proposed. The resulting framework will be used as a guideline to design a prototyping infrastructure that aims at supporting stakeholder collaboration in transdisciplinary research. To assess the influence this design intervention can have on sustainability transitions, the proposal aims to investigate how stakeholders can use the prototyping infrastructure to integrate individual pieces of knowledge and collaboratively produce new knowledge. Lastly, we aim to explore to what extent the collaborative interaction with the prototyping infrastructure can stimulate social learning amongst stakeholders.
